
Hard Light Cinema at UR: Focus on German Film
Hard Light Cinema is a new Richmond collective of cinephiles bringing arthouse and non-mainstream films to central Virginia. The collaboration with Film Studies at University of Richmond aims to connect UR students/faculty/friends with Richmond city film fans. This fall on campus, movies feature German dialogue with English sub-titles.

Spielabend
German Game Night
October 16 - 6-7 p.m. in Jepson 127 and November 12- 6-7 p.m. in INTC Commons
Each semester, students gather for an evening of German games, music, and food at German Game Night, a popular event hosted by German Studies.
“Spielabend has evolved into more of a community building activity, where students and faculty come together to enjoy German music, games, and snacks,” said Kathrin Bower, professor and coordinator of German studies. Brezeln, German soft pretzels, are a favorite.
German welcome, not required!

18th Annual African Film Weekend 2025
Shifting Realities: Pan-African Visions through Cinema

Guest Presenter: Tobi Akinde
Akinde is a Nigerian filmmaker, curator, and researcher currently working between Nigeria and New Orleans. He tells everyday stories of Africans and the African diaspora in a way that challenges dominant gaze and offers alternative cultural perspectives. His films combine variants of realism, direct cinema, archival practice, and mythology.

The Diamond Couple (2024): A Professor’s Film Original

Sonja Bertucci is a filmmaker, UR Assistant Professor of film studies and creative practice, and faculty member in the Languages, Literatures, and Cultures department. Join our celebration of her award-winning documentary, The Diamond Couple, a feature-length piece. The film is a meditation on aging, love, loss, memory, and finitude told through the lens of a centenarian couple based in Los Angeles. After the reception and screening, a Q&A will follow.

Russian Game Night

Students come together for evenings of Russian games, tea, snacks, and Russian music hosted by Russian studies. A relaxed community-building opportunity for students to practice their Russian or to just hang out with other students interested in Russian studies.
This event is open to students of all levels of Russian, so whether you are a native speaker or only know the word “DA” come spend the evening with good friends, good music, and good games!

Richmond Italian Film Festival
March 21-24, 2025
The first edition of the Richmond Italian Film Festival will showcase some of the best Italian films of the last two years and one rediscovered film from the heyday of Italian cinema. Several guests will introduce the films and participate in two roundtable discussions. Our aim is to bring the finest Italian films to Richmond each year.
Hosted by the Department of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures and the Film Studies Program, with the support of the Cultural Affairs Committee, A&S Dean’s Office, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Office of International Education, the Bonner Center for Civic Engagement, the Boatwright Memorial Library, and Italian Cultural Institute (Washington, D.C.).
